Helping to make life better by making saving easier.
NY ABLE helps New York residents with disabilities save for qualified disability expenses without the risk of losing certain valuable benefits they already count on like Supplemental Security Income (SSI) 1 or Medicaid. The Office of the New York State Comptroller administers NY ABLE.
Meaningful tax advantages.
The money earned on investments in NY ABLE are federally tax-deferred and tax-free if used for qualified disability expenses.
Keep benefits currently received.
NY ABLE allows eligible individuals to save more freely without risking the benefits they may already use.
- When combined with other assets held in non-ABLE accounts, balances under $100,000 are excluded from the SSI resource limit.
- If the NY ABLE account balance causes the SSI resource limit to be exceeded, then SSI benefits will be suspended until the account balance no longer exceeds the resource limit.
- Eligible individuals will continue to be eligible for Medicaid, regardless of their account balance.
Choose from a range of investment options.
Contributions to a NY ABLE account are invested in the eligible individual’s choice of investment options, which range from aggressive options seeking higher returns to conservative options designed to protect assets.
NY ABLE also offers an FDIC-Insured checking option through Fifth Third Bank. This option allows eligible individuals to withdraw money using a debit card or check, making it easier to access funds for daily or recurring expenses. Checks or debit cards from the Checking Option can only be used to access funds from the Checking Option, not from other Investment Options.
Easy access to your savings when they are needed.
Eligible individuals can access their NY ABLE savings by:
- going online
- calling the toll-free customer service line
- mailing a paper form
- using a NY ABLE debit card or check, when contributing to the Checking Option.
